Greek Mythology

Do any of you remember studying Greek Mythology in Junior High? I remember it as some of the worst weeks ever. Really... what is the point of Greek Mythology? Maybe it's just me, but why do we waste weeks of time in school talking about these gods and goddesses and these stories that are all make believe?

I was recently reminded of my loathe for Greek Mythology by watching a recent episode of Jeopardy. We record it on the DVR and watch it together every day. C usually gets more answers right than I do, but I get the more difficult ones. : ) This past week, there was an entire category devoted to questions about Greek Mythology. Who cares?!? The contestants were chiming in to answer all of the questions correctly. How do people know this stuff and why does it matter?

Greek mythology is the ancient Greek religion. It's very interesting, as are all religions.

I guess I never realized that was the basis for Greek Mythology. I have always been intersted in other religions, though. Maybe I'll find a new respect for Greek Mythology.

Funny, I was just thinking of Mr.Borup, my 8th grade English teacher. He was very into Greek mythology....but I can't remember a thing about it except the confusion I felt trying to keep everyone straight.

Even in college, I was overwhelmed by all of the gods (there seem to be dozens and dozens of them) and all the details of their stories. For me, nothing ever stuck, I think because I could never relate to the themes. War, beauty, jealousy, hatred, worship...

Actually your comment about "these stories that are all make believe" is what can make it so interesting. What is make believe to one is very real to another. However, I could only name a handful of the Greek gods, and I would probably use some Roman names.
